Varadkar attends special day of openings at Sacred Heart of Jesus NS in Huntstown

Dublin West TD and Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar took part in a very special day at Sacred Heart of Jesus National School in Huntstown on Monday.

The Minister was invited to raise the school’s new yellow flag for equality and diversity, open a new playground, declare the new playing pitch officially open, and cut the ribbon on a new classroom.

“This was a really special day for Sacred Heart of Jesus NS which raised its first yellow flag and opened some fabulous new facilities,” Minister Varadkar said.

“It’s great credit to the school, the staff, the Board of Management, the parents and its pupils that it had four openings in one day.

“Congratulations to the school on securing a Yellow Flag.

“You need to do a lot of work to gain a Yellow Flag so this is a major achievement.

“It shows that Sacred Heart of Jesus School has really embraced multiculturalism, inclusiveness, and diversity.

“We formally opened the new playground, and I’m delighted that the Government contributed to the cost, but I know the school had to engage its own fund-raising to raise the total.

“We also declared the new playing pitch officially open, which was funded through the Local Works Programme, and is a credit to the school.

“And we also cut the ribbon on the new classroom.

“This was funded with an award of €200,000 from the Government, and built by Valtra Construction. It’s a great facility and a magnificent addition to the school.”

The Minister paid tribute to Margaret Mullany, the Yellow Flag co-ordinator in the school, Kevin Kilmurray for developing the playing facilities, Valtra Construction for the classroom, and architect Ann Blackwell.

He also thanked the Chair of the Board of Management, Margaret Condon, and Maria Cummins, the Chair of the Parents’ Association.

He also made a special mention to Principal Sean O Diomasaigh, who is retiring soon, but would love to stay on.

After the ceremonies the Minister was brought on a guided tour of the school’s various displays for Inter-Cultural week before being treated to an amazing performance by the school choir.
