Local TD and Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has confirmed €81 million will be provided for local authority housing in Fingal by the Government.

“€81 million has been allocated to Fingal for local authority housing, which will meet almost a quarter of the authority’s housing need. This is a significant reduction in the waiting list,” Minister Varadkar said.

“It’s estimated that this funding will help to sustain more than 600 jobs in the construction sector. There will be further developments from the Housing Assistance Payment which will reduce demand on our housing waiting list.”

The funding is part of a national allocation by Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Community & Local Government, Paudie Coffey, as part of the Government’s €3.8 billion social housing strategy announced last November.

Across the country, over €1.5 billion will be invested in a combination of building, buying and leasing schemes by local authorities designed to accommodate up to a quarter of those currently on the housing waiting lists in social housing. Approximately 300 separate building proposals by local authorities are being assessed by the Department of Environment and will be announced in a number of phases starting this month. Construction is already underway for social housing in approximately 33 sites throughout the country.
