Local TD and Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport has announced €80,000 in funding from the National Transport Authority to plan a further extension of the Royal Canal Greenway from the 12th Lock in Castleknock to the county boundary with Kildare near Leixlip.

“This is part of a plan to develop a walking and cycling greenway all the way between Galway and Dublin. Some sections are already complete, while others are under construction including the Castleknock to Ashtown section which will open this spring,” Minister Varadkar.

“I’m delighted that funding has been announced to plan and design a cycleway from the 12th Lock to the Kildare border, as this is the most difficult section in Dublin. It contains the ‘deep sinking’ where the canal is much lower than the existing narrow towpath.

“Eventually we want to have a walking and cycle path running all the way from Dublin along the Royal Canal, and along old railway lines to the Shannon and on to Galway.”
