Varadkar launches cross-border tourism brochure

The idyllic setting of the Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen was used to launch the ‘Something for Everyone’ brochure by the Irish Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Leo Varadkar and the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment in Northern Ireland, Mr David Thomson.

The ‘Something for Everyone’ brochure has been the brainchild of both the Border Regional Authority and the Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN). The two organisations came together to help promote one of this region’s best assets, tourism. Both organisations felt that more needed to be done to promote tourism, as it has the potential to be a significant contributor for the regional economy and indeed for cross-border activities.

An inaugural meeting of Tourism Officers from 11 Councils on both sides of the border was held at the beginning of 2013 to discuss how they could collectively promote tourism for the area. The Councils put forward their best attractions to feature within the brochure.

The ‘Something for Everyone’ brochure will be aimed at stimulating tourism business both from overseas visitors to the region and also to locals who are unaware of what neighbouring counties have to offer. It is hoped that both domestic and overseas tourists will be enthused by what is on offer within the region and decide to visit as many of the attractions as possible. The brochure has been developed as part of ICBAN’s Spatial Planning Initiative which is part-financed by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Cross-border programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

This brochure offers a wide range of experiences across the 11 Council area namely; Armagh, Cavan, Cookstown, Donegal, Dungannon & South Tyrone BC, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Louth, Monaghan, Omagh and Sligo. Whether it’s exhilarating mountain biking, relaxing on the Shannon Erne Waterway, adrenalin filled rally driving, enjoying the thrill of horse racing, family fun exploring the universe at the Planetarium, following in your ancestors footsteps, or going back in time at some of the historic castles, readers of the brochure are encouraged to engage with the many things to do within the region. These exciting experiences are just a few that fill the pages of the “Something for Everyone” brochure.

Speaking at the launch Minister Varadkar said: “This brochure is a great example of cross-border community cooperation on tourism. It shows how we can use a high-profile event like the G8 summit to promote Ireland to the wider world. It’s also a golden opportunity to promote the north west and border counties to the huge contingent of international media staying in the area for the summit.”

Speaking at the launch, ICBAN’s Chair, Cllr Jim Cavanagh said; “We at ICBAN are delighted to have worked with the Border Regional Authority and the 11 Councils to have created this brochure dedicated to the cross-border region. The brochure features authentic experiences, inspirational trips, family activities and adventurous filled days out throughout the region; there really is “Something for Everyone” within this brochure”.
