Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has said the announcement of a new Dublin to Helsinki air route is more good news for air access to Ireland during the Gathering 2013.
“This is welcome news for Ireland in the run-up to the Gathering Ireland 2013. The Gathering is all about bringing people to Ireland during 2013, whether or not they are Irish. This new route to Helsinki will significantly improve access to Ireland from an important market,” Minister Varadkar said.
Norwegian has confirmed it will operate a new route from Dublin to Helsinki from April 12th, on Mondays and Fridays. There is a possibility that the service will continue into the winter season as well.
Visitor numbers from European destinations continue to perform strongly and the Helsinki service is expected to add to that growth. Recent figures showed that the number of visits from European markets outside of Great Britain was up by 2.1% during 2012.
This announcement comes after a number of new routes were announced to North America, which are expected to increase capacity by 20%. Aer Lingus is operating extra services from Chicago, Boston and Orlando, while United, US Airways and American Airlines, have also announced new services.
