Minister Varadkar welcomes confirmation that Ongar community facilities will open by September

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport and local TD for Dublin West, Leo Varadkar, has welcomed confirmation from Fingal County Council that the new community centres at St Benedict’s National School in Ongar and Scoil Pobail Setanta secondary school, serving both Ongar and Clonee, will be opened to the public by September of this year.

The Minister received confirmation following a meeting with the Fingal County Manager.

The community centre at St Benedict’s in Ongar is expected to open in the coming weeks, and the school will be officially opened on Friday, June 17th.

The community centre at Scoil Pobail Setanta secondary school, which serves both Ongar and Clonee, will open by September.

Both community facilities were built alongside the new schools and are intended for use by the school as well as the community. The facilities will be managed under a contract from the council.

Speaking today, Minister Varadkar said: ‘I am very pleased that these brand new community facilities will be open in the next few months. Residents in Ongar and Clonee have been frustrated that these facilities had been built, but not opened’.

“Ongar and Clonee are new communities which developed rapidly during the boom period, with thousands of new homes being built. However facilities like schools, parks, community centres and transport lagged behind.

“The schools are now open, and both community centres will be open within the next 12 weeks.

“The next key item on the agenda is the train station and I hope to be able to make a positive announcement on that shortly.”
